About the Irish Army Reserve

  • The Army Reserve is Part of the Reserve Defence Forces (RDF) of Ireland. The Army Reserve train on a part-time basis. The other element in the RDF is the Naval Reserve. It is a part-time organistaion.
  • The Army Reserve was formerly called the FCA- An Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil.
  • Its primary role is the second line Reserve of the Army.
  • The Army Reserve is currently undergoing a re-organisation which includes extensive modernisation.

Tactical TrainingThe Reorganisation
The Army Reserve is currently undergoing reorganisation to modernise and mirror the organisation of the Permanent Defence Forces (Regular Army). The reorganisation which is ongoing sets out the roles as:

  • Defence against armed aggression
  • Aid to the civil power (ATCP)
  • Participation in peace support operations (When the reorganisation is completed)
  • Other duties which may be assigned by government.

On the 1st of October 2005 the 21st Battalion and the 20th Battalion were amalgamated to form the 62nd Battallion.


Structure
It is organised into 3 Brigades:

  • The 1st (Southern) Brigade
  • The 2nd (Eastern) Brigade
  • The 4th (Western) Brigade.

The Army Reserve is split, as is the PDF (Permanent Defence Force -Full Time) into various Corps. The 62nd Battlalion is an Infantry Battalion in the Eastern Brigade.
