B Company (Dun Laoghaire)

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Crest

Introduction

Company Area MapB Company covers the area of the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County administrative area. We particularly welcome recruits from this area and people living along the DART line. The company trains weekly on Wednesday nights from 1955 hrs (7.55pm).

B Company's history can be traced back to the Local Defence Forces of the 1940s and until 2005 was B Company of the 21 Infantry Battalion. The company remained B Company and is now a rifle company in the 62 Reserve Infantry Battalion. For more information on B Company's history click here.

Although currently a relatively small unit B Company is probably the most active unit in the battalion.

Recent Activities

Integrated Exercise PlatoonSince the transition from the FCA to the Army Reserve things have been very busy for B Company. The new organisation requires a higher level of training and B Company has certainly been heavily involved in this. In addition to increased training opportunities there has been more interaction with the Regular Army which has helped improve the level of training for all.

2007 has seen another busy year of training so far with the company being represented on a wide variety of training courses, ceremonial events and operations. Annual Personal Weapons Tests were completed in January and February on both Steyr and GPMG with good results.

The period from January to June saw the completion of 2-3 star training for last years two stars and the beginning of recruit training for our new recruit platoon. Most of the recruits completed their recruit training at the annual recruit camp held in the Glen of Imaal and the Curragh with instructors from the company teaching them, along with the rest of the battalion's recruits.

Nissan Patrol GRIn March members of the company were sent on the Brigades MT (Motor Transport) driving course qualifying them to drive Nissan Patrol off-road vehicles and other vehicles.

From January until April instructors from B company ran the battalion's Preliminary Potential NCO's (PNCO) course to prepare the PNCO's from the unit for the Brigade PNCO course in the Summer.

B Company was represented at the Brigade and All Army rifle and Light Machine Gun (LMG) shoots winning the best individual on the LMG in the Brigade. A team from the company also participated at the Brigades Orienteering competition winning Novice Individual (Female).

The company was again represented at the 1916 Easter Rising commemoration with members having the honour of participating in a 100-man Presidential Guard of Honour outside the General Post Office in Dublin.

Members from the company also attended and completed the Potential NCO's Course, and Standard Officer's Course.

In 2006 the company conducted several courses including a General Purpose Machine Gun course (GPMG), a GPMG SF (Sustained Fire) course, and an 84 Anti Tank course. Personnel from the company were also represented on the 12.7mm Heavy Machine Gun Course (HMG) , the SINCGAR Radio Operator's course, the Potential Non Commissioned Officers (NCO's) course and Standard NCO's course.

Integrated ExerciseIn addition to these courses troops from the company participated in 2 weeks of exercises with the regular Army. Other activities throughout the year included training new recruits, advanced training for 2 & 3* privates, shooting practices, combat training weekends and ceremonial events including the Easter Parade.

One of the high points of the year was the Eastern Brigade (Reserve Defence Forces) Combined Weapons Shoot in the Glen of Imaal where members of the company put their training into practice and fired the GPMG SF and 12.7mm HMG.

New Dun Laoghaire Training Centre

Despite the loss of the Old Coastguard Station (Dun Laoghaire Harbour) as B Company's training centre the company has kept going and is currently in the closing stages of acquiring a new centre in Dun Laoghaire. The development of this new centre will allow the company to re-build and train more young local people as reserve soldiers.

This centre is due to open soon. Until then B Companys office is temporarily located in Rockbrae House, Vevay Road, Bray. For details on how to get there click here.

The Future

HMG ShootThe future is looking up for B Company. Undoubtedly the company faces many new challenges, and is prepared to meet these. The new organisation and more involvement with the Regular Army will bring more opportunities for better and improved training.

It is planned that within the next few years each battalion will provide an integrated company within the Regular Army, in addition to weapons and support detachments. B Company will be providing troops to fill these positions.

Joining / Recruitment - Your place in B Company

Basecamp RoutineTo maintain such a busy unit requires new people joining every year. As a recruit in B Company you will receive the most modern and challenging training that the Army Reserve can offer. B Company has members from many parts of Dun-Laoghaire-Rathdown and beyond from many different backgrounds and occupations.

Expected Commitment

Joining the Defence Forces requires a robust type of person both mentally and physically. As a reservist you will be expected to give up some of your free time on a regular basis. However, this can be very rewarding and in addition to normal training you will have many opportunities to socialise with new people, participate in recreational activities, and find and develop new interests. You may complete up to 42 days paid service per year.

Up for the Challenge?

We would like to hear from fit and enthusiastic men and women, in good health, between the ages of 17 and 35 who can commit to being a member of the Army Reserve.
