After Easter Parade Army is Given its Marching Orders
There have been calls
this week to preserve an historic Dun Laoghaire army base that maintains
the area's final link with the Irish Defence Forces.
The rundown premises
is used by Company B (ed: B Coy 62 Res. Inf. Bn.) of the Irish Army but
is owned by the Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company. The company say that refurbishing
the building would result in a rent increase that would put it beyond
army budgets.
Proposals have been
made to relocate Company B to an alternative base in Bray, which will
not be ready for use for another 12 months.
This move would mean
that Wicklow would have two army reserve forces, as the county is already
home to Company C (ed: C Coy 62 Res. Inf. Bn.).
Deputy Barry Andrews
(FF) said it was important to maintain Dun Laoghaire's long history with
the Defence Forces. He is now seeking assurances from the Minister of
Defence Willy O'Dea, that the link will not be broken.
"I will be asking
the Minister of Defence to give an assurance that every effort will be
made to ensure that the Army Reserve will remain in Dun Laoghaire,"
Deputy Andrews said.
Deputy Andrews praised
the important work that the reserve does in providing valuable training
and leadership skills to young men and women.
He added that the
recent 1916 commemorations high-lighted the vital role of the Defence
Forces.
"To see Dun Laoghaire
lose its link with the forces would be regrettable," he added. "During
the recent 1916 commemorations public attention was drawn to the permanent
and reserve Defence Forces both at home and on peacekeeping duties across
the globe. It would be regrettable if shortly after these events we were
to see the Army Reserve leave Dun Laoghaire."
A spokesman for the
Dun Laoghaire Harbour Board said that the lease available to the Defence
Forces expired last March and that the premises is no longer sustainable
to support them.
However, he suggested
that the forces might be able to stay in the town."
"The Harbour
Company is working alongside the Defence Forces to find a suitable location
and has identified three alternative locations in Dun Laoghaire,"
he said.
