Saturday 16 December 2006 - Corporal Will Day R.I.P

Will Day

Unfortunately Cpl William Day died of a heart attack on Saturday 9th December 2006.

Will was formerly a member of A Company 21 Infantry Battalion and with the reorganisation of the RDF became a member of C Company 62 Reserve Infantry Battalion. One of the proudest moments of his life was when he was promoted to Corporal.

Will was one of the most down to earth people around and showed great enthusiasm for life. He was eternally loyal to the troops under his command and won the hearts and minds of many that knew him. He had a unique ability to make the best of any situation and make people simile.

Will will be sadly missed from the ranks of C Company and the Battalion as a whole.

At the request of his parents, Will received a RDF Bearer Party and Pall Bearers. At the removal members who knew him lined part of the road. Will's father (also Will) would like us to pass on his appreciation for all those involved.

Tuesday 3 May 2006 - "Last Post for Southside Barracks" (Article from Southside People)

Month After Easter Parade Army is Given its Marching Orders

There have been calls this week to preserve an historic Dun Laoghaire army base that maintains the area's final link with the Irish Defence Forces.

The rundown premises is used by Company B (ed: B Coy 62 Res. Inf. Bn.) of the Irish Army but is owned by the Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company. The company say that refurbishing the building would result in a rent increase that would put it beyond army budgets.

Proposals have been made to relocate Company B to an alternative base in Bray, which will not be ready for use for another 12 months.

This move would mean that Wicklow would have two army reserve forces, as the county is already home to Company C (ed: C Coy 62 Res. Inf. Bn.).

Deputy Barry Andrews (FF) said it was important to maintain Dun Laoghaire's long history with the Defence Forces. He is now seeking assurances from the Minister of Defence Willy O'Dea, that the link will not be broken.

"I will be asking the Minister of Defence to give an assurance that every effort will be made to ensure that the Army Reserve will remain in Dun Laoghaire," Deputy Andrews said.

Deputy Andrews praised the important work that the reserve does in providing valuable training and leadership skills to young men and women.

He added that the recent 1916 commemorations high-lighted the vital role of the Defence Forces.

"To see Dun Laoghaire lose its link with the forces would be regrettable," he added. "During the recent 1916 commemorations public attention was drawn to the permanent and reserve Defence Forces both at home and on peacekeeping duties across the globe. It would be regrettable if shortly after these events we were to see the Army Reserve leave Dun Laoghaire."

A spokesman for the Dun Laoghaire Harbour Board said that the lease available to the Defence Forces expired last March and that the premises is no longer sustainable to support them.

However, he suggested that the forces might be able to stay in the town."

"The Harbour Company is working alongside the Defence Forces to find a suitable location and has identified three alternative locations in Dun Laoghaire," he said.

Wednesday 22nd March 2006 (Bray People newspaper) - 62 Battalion members foil a robbery

"Uniformed FCA members were the unwitting heroes of a failed attempt to hold up the Tesco store at the Vevey last Wednesday night (15th March).

Two FCA men, (from the 62 Reserve Infantry Battalion) just happened to be inside the supermarket when a gunman and his hatchet-wielding accomplice ran in at about 11.am and shouted at staff, before spotting the two in uniform.

According to an eyewitness, the raiders seemed to believe they were regular Army personnel who may even have been armed themselves, and so the would-be thieves quickly turned on their heels and fled empty-handed.

A security man at the store contacted police but by the time the Gardai arrived the men had departed the scene in a getaway car.

A Blue Honda civic thought to be that used by the potential raiders was later found burnt out in the Briar Wood Estate in the Vevey."
