Typical Soldiers' Profile

This narrative will give you an idea of what your part-time career in the Army Reserve could be. It profiles the first four years of a soldiers' career in the Army Reserve. The name John is used to refer to the soldier.

Year One

Civilian to Recruit

John is a young person looking for a more active life. He decides that the Army Reserve after having an interest for a while He visits his local unit and applies for enlistment. He is given an interview and has a medical 6 weeks later. Four weeks after that he is issued his combat uniform and begins his recruit training. This includes weapons training, footdrill and fieldcraft. In addition to attending one training night per week, he attends several weekends, including visits to the rifle range.

Recruit to Trained Soldier (2 Star)

John attends his first week-long (paid) training camp, held at Easter and completes his recruit training with a two week (paid) camp in the summer. This includes weapons training, combat training, first aid and firing the Steyr rifle for the first time. At the end of this camp he is upgraded to Private Two Star. He also completes a week of paid duties with his company during the summer.

Completion of his Training (2 star - 3 star)

John continues training with his company and trains and fires the General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG). After undergoing more tactical training he is upgraded to Private Three Star and is now a fully trained soldier.


Year Two

Now a trained soldier, John continues normal training within his company which includes tactical exercises, weapons courses such as the GPMG SF, 84mm Anti-Tank, and 60mm Mortar, and duties with his unit. He also goes on exercises with the regular Army.

As an active reservist John takes part in many events such as the annual rifle competitions, orienteering, the Easter Parade, and Brigade Exercises.


Year Three

Being a fully licenced driver, John is put on the Army driving course and qualifies as as driver on the Nissan Patrol. He also undergoes training on the SINCGAR radio.

Along with normal unit training John is also involved in the units social events such as the Christmas Party, outings and unit dinners.


Year Four

Since joining John has shown himself to be a well motivated, active and reliable member of his company and is sent on a Potential Non Commissioned Officers Course. Here he learns how to teach lessons, command troops, lead his section in combat and further develop his soldiering skills. He successfully completes this and is promoted to Corporal. He is now responsible for the training, administration and welfare of his eight-man section.
