What to Bring on the Ground / on an Exercise

As part of your annual training you will go 'on the ground'. This involves living away from barracks / camp for between 24 and 72 hours. This guide will help give you an idea of what to bring with you. When considering what to bring always remember that you must carry everything. It is recommended that you bag everything. Glad ziplock freezer bags are the best and come in various sizes.

  • This list is intended only as a guide. Before going on camp consult your NCO about what kit you will need.
  • You may find this document ('Admin in the Field') from 'Connect' (February 2004) useful.
Backpack
You will be issued a small haversack as part of the 58 webbing. A better option would be to acquire a bigger, more suitable rucksack. Your rucksack will carry much of the gear you need to be able to live with the field. Contents may include:
  • Sleeping System. This will be issued to you as required. Store in waterproof bag. Kit mat (stored in waterproof bag or camouflagecover on top of rucksack or inside). You may consider buying a Bivvy Bag. This is a waterproof sleeping bag liner designed for sleeping outdoors in. Tent pegs (not issued) and paracdord (not issued) are esential for setting up your sleeping shelter.
  • Clothes: Spare T-shirts, Norweigan / Fleece, Spare Socks, underwear, Waterproof Socks / boot liners (not issued but recommended to keep your feet dry if boots are wet), spare trousers (if necessary), waterproof clothing (issued as required). You may condier buying some lightweight thermals also. Balaclava / thermal hat for night (not issued). Gloves. Gaiters (not issued). Bush Hat (not issued). Keep soiled and dry clothes separate. Lightweight towel (highly absorbent / quick drying - not issued) Store everything in waterproof bags.
  • Hygiene / First Aid: A small first aid kit (not issued) though not essential may come in handy. Razor and shaving soap / gel with small container for water. Small toothbrush and paste. Antiseptic wipes. Camo wipes / baby wipes (for removing camo cream). Dry wash liquid (to wash without water), vaseline. Footpowder, footspray. First aid kit may be bought in any good outdoor shop. Surgical gloves.
  • Miscellaneous: Platypus / water bladder with tube (not issued) for drinking on the move and storing water. Camo tape. Polish / wax for waterproofing you boots. Spare boot laces. Storm matches (optional - there are matches in the ration pack) in watertight box.
Webbing / Personal Load Carrying Equipment

The equipment which you carry on your belt. Units are still using 58 pattern webbing and this is what you will most likely be issued. There is a limited supply of the more modern PLCE for courses. You can also buy your own but this can be expensive.

Rations: - Open ration pack only take what you need. Mess tin for cooking etc... Hexi (Hexamine) cooker and spare tablets. Eating irons: knife, fork, spoon, tin opener. The ration pack issued provides a balanced diet but you may want to bring some personal favourites along with you.
Ammunition: 5.56mm blanks and thun flashes will be brought on tactical exercises.
Rifle cleaning materials (Issued)
Waterbottle(s) Carry two waterbottles. Green US type are better than black 58 type.
Poncho. To make sleeping shelter with. You can buy better lightweight ponchos.
Toilet Roll. (small quantity in ration pack)
Bungee cords. (not issued) To keep webbing tightly together when moving.
Spare torch (not issued)
Leather / waterproof gloves (not issued but can make life easier)
Ear defenders When on tactical training which involves pyrotechnics (blank rounds etc...) you must wear hearing protection. This will be issued to you.

Smock

  • Torch (not issued - with spare batteries and red filter)
  • Camo cream (not issued). Mosquito net (not issued - for your personal comfort).
  • Insect repellant (not issued but essential).
  • Scrim netting for camouflaging your personal weapon, helmet etc... Can also be used as a scarf.
  • Sweets / Brew Kit - Tea/Coffee/Hot Chocolate/Isotonic Drink
